The Sun Conference announces its major award winners for the 2024-25 women’s basketball season, as Florida Memorial University took two major awards, including Kamesha Moore who was named 2024-25 SUN Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year along with her head coach Kevin Herod, who earned conference Coach of the Year honors.
Kamesha Moore of Florida Memorial has been named the Sun Conference Player of the Year. This senior guard from Pasadena, California, led the Lions to a 13-3 conference record, securing the Regular Season Title. Moore leads FMU’s scoring, averaging 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in conference play. Excelling in various areas, she has accumulated 35 steals and maintained a nearly 50% shooting average from the field.

Warner’s Bethany Howard has earned the Freshman of the Year award. Howard has played in and started all 25 games for the Royals, averaging 11.2 points per game, the second-highest on the team. She scored in double figures in 17 of those games, helping the Royals reach the Sun Conference Tournament. Additionally, she averaged 4.7 rebounds per game and recorded 43 assists and 16 steals.
C’dara Manuel of New College of Florida has been awarded this year’s Champion of Character. A dedicated community contributor, Manuel has supported various initiatives, including the Salvation Army toy drive, diaper drives, and food drives. Recently, she organized her own clothing collection and donated the items to homeless individuals in a local park. Additionally, as the Vice President of the Black Student Union at New College, she organizes events and encourages her peers to engage on campus. Her head coach, Brian Cruz, praised her, stating, “C’dara is a great team player on the court, always cheering on her teammates and never complaining, regardless of her playing time. She is the team’s biggest cheerleader, always respectful towards her opponents, and consistently upholds her high character.”
Kevin Herod of FMU has been named Coach of the Year. In his first season as head coach of the Lions, Herod led his team to a Regular Season Title, reclaiming the trophy for Miami Gardens, their first since 2023. The Lions hold a record of 21-4 overall and 13-3 in the conference. Under Herod’s leadership, the team averages 72.4 points per game and limits their opponents to 55.2 points, achieving a scoring margin of 17.2. Additionally, FMU has a rebounding margin of 8.4 and a team field goal percentage of 42%.
